Te mapa
Kaluga stands on the left bank of the Oka River, southwest of Moscow, and its map is shaped by water and ravines. The old centre occupies high ground above the river, with streets laid out in the late eighteenth century following a regular plan. Deep gullies cut through this plateau, giving the historic core irregular edges and natural green corridors.
One of those ravines is spanned by the Stone Bridge, built in the 1770s and among the oldest stone viaducts in Russia, still carrying a street across the Berezuysky ravine. Kaluga is also closely associated with Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, the pioneer of spaceflight theory, who lived and worked here for decades; the State Museum of the History of Cosmonautics bears his name.
A Kaluga map poster shows a city where a planned street layout and natural terrain meet visibly. The broad curve of the Oka, the smaller Yachenka joining it, the ravines threading through the centre and the districts across the river all combine into a layered composition, calm in tone but full of detail.
The wide Oka curves along the southern side of the centre, forming the dominant natural line of the map and separating the old city from districts on the opposite bank.
The eighteenth-century viaduct crosses the Berezuysky ravine near the centre, a short but historic link joining two parts of the old street plan.
Several deep gullies run through the city, appearing as winding breaks in the street pattern and giving central Kaluga its irregular, textured outline.
