Bodh Gaya, in the Indian state of Bihar, is where the Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment beneath the Bodhi tree. The Mahabodhi Temple complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stands at the centre of the town, and on a map its grounds form a distinct enclosure among the surrounding lanes, the point toward which everything else seems to turn.
Around it, monasteries and temples built by Buddhist communities from Thailand, Japan, Bhutan, Tibet, Myanmar and other countries occupy their own compounds, each with gardens and courtyards. The Niranjana river, known locally as the Lilajan, runs along the eastern side of town, a wide sandy bed for much of the year that fills during the monsoon.
A Bodh Gaya map poster traces how the town is arranged around devotion: the temple at its heart, monastery grounds spreading outward and the river beyond. The large seated figure of the Great Buddha Statue stands a short walk from the temple, and the road north toward the city of Gaya links this quiet place to the wider region.
The temple enclosure, with its tall tower and the Bodhi tree, marks the centre of the map, surrounded by walkways and the lanes of the old town.
Compounds built by Buddhist communities from across Asia spread through the town, each with its own walls, gardens and courtyards that appear as distinct blocks from above.
The broad, sandy river bed runs along the town's eastern side, a wide pale band on the map that carries water mainly during the monsoon months.

Koteā ko Bodh Gaya
Pilgrims, meditation students and travellers often want something from Bodh Gaya that is quieter than a souvenir. A map of the town, centred on the Mahabodhi Temple, suits a meditation room, study or entrance hall as a calm reminder of time spent there.
