Bonan sits in the mountains of western Yunnan, where level ground is scarce. On a map the town fills a valley floor, its streets pressed into a long, narrow band. Around it the contour-heavy terrain of the Hengduan ranges takes over the rest of the sheet, with long ridges and deep folds running out past the edges.
The name recalls the old Bonan road, part of the historic southwestern trade route that once linked the Yunnan plateau with lands further west. Today the town is shaped more by its valley than by that history. A main road follows the low ground, and the side streets climb only as far as the slopes allow before farmland and forest take over.
A Bonan map poster shows how a mountain town keeps to its valley.
