Te mapa
Bozhou lies on the open North China Plain in the far north-west of Anhui, close to the border with Henan. The land is flat and intensively farmed, and the city's form comes almost entirely from its roads and its river. The Guo River curves along the northern side of the old town, the one natural line that interrupts an otherwise regular landscape.
Bozhou is the birthplace of Cao Cao, the statesman and general of the late Han, and of Hua Tuo, one of the most celebrated physicians in Chinese history. The historic core near the river keeps a denser mesh of short streets and lanes, including the Huaxilou, an ornate Qing-era guild hall and theatre stage that is one of the town's best-known buildings.
In keeping with Hua Tuo's legacy, the city is today one of China's largest trading centres for traditional medicinal herbs, and fields of cultivated plants surround it. Beyond the old centre, newer districts are laid out in large rectangular blocks with broad roads. A Bozhou map poster shows how the older town and its river sit within this expanding, carefully measured grid.
The river curves past the old town, providing a soft, flowing line against the straight roads of the plain and marking the historic heart of the city.
A tighter weave of short streets and lanes near the river, where older buildings such as the Huaxilou stand, sets itself apart from the broader modern blocks.
New districts extend over the flat farmland in large rectangles of wide roads, their geometry giving the outer parts of the map a calm, orderly rhythm.

Koteā ko Bozhou
Bozhou matters to people with family roots in northern Anhui, to those who work in its herb trade, and to anyone drawn to the history of the Three Kingdoms period. Its river and grid make a simple, well-balanced composition.
