Tongshan is a district of Xuzhou in northern Jiangsu, and on the map it surrounds much of the city's central urban area. Its territory mixes new residential and industrial zones with farmland and low hills, creating a looser pattern than the dense older core it encircles. Wide new roads and expressways run through it, linking Xuzhou with the surrounding countryside.
Xuzhou has long been a crossroads, and Tongshan's map shows it. The Beijing–Shanghai and Longhai railways cross in the Xuzhou area, and new high-speed lines have added further corridors. Lakes and wooded hills break up the built-up land, and planned districts with broad avenues and large blocks spread out from the older city.
