Te mapa
Bressay lies immediately east of Lerwick, Shetland's main town, and its western shore forms one side of Bressay Sound, the sheltered harbour that made Lerwick possible. On a map the island is a compact, rounded shape, with a short car ferry crossing linking it to the town. The coast is broken into small voes and headlands typical of Shetland.
The interior rises to Ward Hill, the island's highest point, while a few roads run out toward scattered crofts, the lighthouse at Kirkabister Ness in the south and the eastern coast. Much of the land is open moorland, so the map is defined more by contours, lochs and shoreline than by any dense pattern of streets.
Off the east coast, across a narrow sound, lies the Isle of Noss, a national nature reserve whose high cliffs hold tens of thousands of nesting seabirds. A Bressay map poster can be framed to include Lerwick's harbour front on one side and Noss on the other, showing how closely town, island and wild coast sit together.
The narrow channel between Bressay and Lerwick forms a natural harbour, drawn as a sheltered stretch of water lined on the far side by the town's piers and streets.
The island's highest ground rises in the interior, and its slopes give the otherwise open moorland a clear focal point on the map.
Just off the east coast, Noss appears as a small, cliff-edged island separated by a narrow sound, well known for its seabird colonies.

Shetlanders, people who have worked in Lerwick's harbour and visitors who crossed to see the Noss cliffs will know this view well. The mix of town edge, moorland and coast makes an unusual, balanced composition for a hallway or study.
