Unst is the most northerly of the Shetland Islands and the northernmost inhabited island in the United Kingdom. It is longer than it is wide, running north to south, with its coast cut by voes, the Shetland word for long sea inlets. The landscape is open and treeless, with low hills, lochs and moorland, and its northern tip breaks into cliffs facing the open sea.
Baltasound, on a sheltered voe on the east coast, is the largest settlement, and a main road runs the length of the island from the ferry terminal at Belmont in the south to Haroldswick and beyond in the north. Branch roads lead out to crofts and small communities, leaving large areas of hill and moor between them.
At the northwest tip lies Hermaness, a nature reserve whose cliffs hold large seabird colonies, and just offshore stands Muckle Flugga with its lighthouse, among the most northerly points of the British Isles. Unst is also known for its concentration of Viking-age longhouse sites. An Unst map poster shows the whole island, from Belmont to the outlying rocks at its northern end.

The largest village sits around a long, sheltered voe on the east coast, where the main road and the shoreline run close together.
A single road runs the length of Unst from south to north, a clear spine on the map from which smaller lanes branch out to crofts.
