Te mapa
Bryggen lines the eastern side of Vågen, the inner harbour of Bergen, on Norway's west coast. From above, it looks like a comb. A row of long, narrow wooden buildings stands with gable ends facing the water, and each is separated from the next by a slim passage running back from the quay. Behind them, the ground rises towards the steep hills that surround the city.
From the fourteenth to the sixteenth centuries, Bryggen was the base of the Hanseatic League's merchants in Norway, who traded mainly in dried fish. The buildings have burned and been rebuilt many times, most notably after a major fire in 1702. They were reconstructed following the medieval layout, which is why the plan remains so distinctive.
Bryggen was added to UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1979. On a Bryggen map poster, the wharf's regular rhythm stands in contrast with the curving harbour, the old fortress to the north and the city streets beyond. It is one of the clearest examples of medieval trading architecture shown in outline.
The buildings face Vågen in a straight row, their gables towards the water. They form a clean edge against the harbour on the map.
Slim lanes run inland between the wooden buildings, creating a regular comb-like pattern that follows the medieval plot layout.
Just north of Bryggen, the old fortress guards the harbour entrance. Its larger, open grounds close the northern end of the wharf.

Koteā ko Bryggen
Bryggen is the image many people carry home from Bergen, and for those with roots in western Norway it is part of family history. A map preserves its shape without relying on its colourful façades.
Choose your own title and subtitle, perhaps a date, a family name or a ship, and edit the coordinates. Choose from five styles. Paper suits the old wharf's archival feel, and Noir gives the harbour a darker, northern mood.
