Kvitfjell lies in Gudbrandsdalen, in the Norwegian county of Innlandet, north of Lillehammer near Fåvang. From above it is a set of long, narrow pistes carved through conifer forest on the valley side. They descend toward the river Gudbrandsdalslågen, the E6 road and the Dovre railway on the valley floor. Cabins spread across the higher, gentler ground above.
The resort was built for the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, when it hosted the downhill and super-G races. Its Olympic course is still a regular stop on the World Cup speed circuit, known for its jumps and technical demands. Outside race weeks Kvitfjell is a relaxed family area, and the plateau above offers long cross-country trails.
A Kvitfjell map poster reads as a study in parallel lines: river, road and railway running along the valley, with ski runs slanting down to meet them. The sparse landscape leaves room for the eye. The result is a clean, graphic image that suits a hallway or a cabin wall as well as a city flat.

The river, the E6 and the railway run side by side along the floor of Gudbrandsdalen. This triple band of lines anchors the lower part of the map.
Above the lifts, holiday cabins spread across gentler terrain in loose clusters linked by small roads, a very Norwegian pattern of scattered settlement.
