Buhimba is a town in western Uganda, in the Bunyoro sub-region a little south of Hoima. From above it has a loose, informal layout. A central cluster of buildings gathers around the main road junction, and settlement thins out quickly into gardens, fields and homesteads. There is no strict grid here. The streets follow the land and the routes people have always used.
The surrounding country is gently rolling, with farmland and patches of woodland stretching west towards the Albertine Rift and the escarpment above Lake Albert. In recent years this part of Uganda has become better known because of oil development around the lake, and new roads have made the region more accessible. On a map the older tracks and the newer, straighter routes sit side by side.
