Te mapa
Butwāl sits in Nepal's Lumbini Province exactly at the meeting of two landscapes. To the north rise the forested Chure hills, also known as the Siwaliks; to the south stretches the flat Terai plain toward the Indian border. The Tinau River cuts a gorge through the hills and emerges beside the city, and Butwal's streets spread out on either side of it.
The city is an important transport and trade node. The Siddhartha Highway begins its climb north from here toward Pokhara, and the east-west Mahendra Highway passes nearby, making Butwal a crossroads for the western half of the country. Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha, lies a short drive to the southwest across the plain.
A Butwāl map poster captures that meeting of hill and plain in one frame. The dense street grid spreads across the flat ground to the south, the highway winds north into the valley, and the Tinau River draws a strong line between them, making the city's geography unusually easy to read.

Starting in Butwal, the highway winds north into the hills toward Pokhara, a sinuous line that contrasts with the straight streets of the plain below.
South of the hills, Butwal's streets spread across level ground in a looser grid, gradually thinning out into farmland as the Terai plain extends toward the border.
