Cafarnaum is a municipality in the interior of Bahia, in northeastern Brazil, set in the semi-arid backlands known as the sertão. The town takes its name from the biblical Capernaum, reflecting the religious names common in the region. On the map it appears as a compact urban area with a clear centre, surrounded by wide stretches of scrub and farmland.
Near the centre the streets form a mostly regular grid, which loosens into longer blocks and unpaved roads at the edges.
