Te mapa
Cancún is really two places on one map. The Hotel Zone runs along a narrow barrier island shaped like the number seven, with the Caribbean on one side and the Nichupté lagoon system on the other. The mainland city, where most residents live, spreads inland behind the lagoon in a much wider and denser pattern of streets.
The resort was a planned project. In the late 1960s the Mexican government selected this almost undeveloped stretch of the Quintana Roo coast for tourism, and construction began around 1970. Downtown was laid out in large superblocks, called supermanzanas, with curving streets inside and wide avenues between them, a pattern that reads clearly from above.
Just offshore to the north lies Isla Mujeres, and the reef along this coast forms part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. A Cancún map poster centred on the lagoon captures the unusual geometry of the place: a thin line of land, a large sheet of calm water, and a planned city fanning out behind it.

A broad, irregular lagoon system that separates the Hotel Zone from the mainland. Its inlets and mangrove edges create large quiet areas that balance the density of downtown.
Downtown is organised into numbered superblocks, each with curving internal streets and bounded by arterial avenues. It is a planned pattern quite unlike the older colonial grids of Mexican cities.

Koteā ko Cancún
Many people know Cancún from a honeymoon, a family trip or a wedding on the beach, and a map is a restrained way to remember it. Residents, who often live well away from the hotel strip, may prefer a crop centred on downtown and their own supermanzana.
Set the title to Cancún or to something more personal, add the dates of your stay in the subtitle, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Printed posters come on matte paper with an optional wooden frame, from partners in more than 30 countries.
