Te mapa
The historic centre of Campeche is a near-perfect grid of straight streets, originally enclosed by a hexagonal wall with bastions at its corners. Much of the wall was removed over time, but its outline still reads on the map as a ring road around the old town. Beyond it, newer districts extend along the coast and up into the low hills behind the city.
The walls were built in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries to protect the port from pirate attacks, which had repeatedly struck the city. Several bastions and two main gates survive, along with hilltop forts on either side of town. The historic fortified town of Campeche is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised as an example of Spanish colonial military planning.
Along the waterfront, the malecón runs for several kilometres beside the Gulf, a long, straight line that forms the western edge of the city. A Campeche map poster brings together the fortified core, the ring that replaced the walls and the sweep of the seafront, a clear picture of how a colonial port was designed for defence.
Inside the former walls, the old town's regular blocks form a crisp chequerboard, bounded by a ring of streets that follows the line of the original fortifications.
Surviving bastions punctuate the ring around the centre, while forts on hills at either end of the city overlook the bay and the streets below.
The seafront promenade runs along the Gulf of Mexico in a long, clean line, separating the city from the shallow water and giving the map its western edge.

Koteā ko Campeche
Campeche's fortified grid is one of the most legible colonial plans in the Americas, and it translates naturally into black and white. It suits travellers who walked its walls as well as families with roots on the Yucatán Peninsula.
Personalise the title and subtitle with a date or dedication and adjust the coordinates line. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand; Sand echoes the city's warm facades. The $9 download includes six sizes with no watermark.
