Te mapa
Belmopan is one of the few capitals in the Americas built from scratch. After Hurricane Hattie devastated Belize City in 1961, the government decided to move inland, away from the coast, and Belmopan became the capital in 1970. Its map reflects that origin. A ring road encloses a central core in a deliberate layout, rather than a street pattern grown over centuries.
The government complex sits at the heart of the plan, including the National Assembly building, whose design draws on ancient Maya architecture. Curving residential streets and cul-de-sacs fill the space inside and beyond the ring road, separated by open land and greenery. The Belize River and the main highways pass nearby and link the town to the rest of the country.
With a little over ten thousand residents, Belmopan is among the smallest national capitals in the Americas, and its streets feel spacious even at the centre. A Belmopan map poster captures a planned town in miniature: clear loops, generous open spaces and a calm, measured structure, surrounded by the forested hills of the Cayo District.
A loop road encircles the central district. It gives the map a strong, clear outline and marks the edge of the original plan.
The ministries and the National Assembly building are grouped at the centre. They form a compact cluster of planned blocks and open spaces.
Curving streets and cul-de-sacs spread around the core. This distinctly modern pattern sets Belmopan apart from older capitals in the region.

Koteā ko Belmopan
Belizeans, people who have worked in the capital and travellers heading through Cayo to the Maya sites often want to remember Belmopan. Its planned loops and open spaces give the map an unusual, almost diagrammatic look that suits modern interiors.
