Puerto Barrios is Guatemala's historic port on the Caribbean, set on the Bay of Amatique near the mouth of the Gulf of Honduras. The town has a regular, open grid of numbered streets and avenues, laid out on flat ground beside the water, with piers and port facilities extending along the shoreline.
The town was founded in the late nineteenth century and named after President Justo Rufino Barrios. In the early twentieth century it became the terminus of the railway to Guatemala City and the main export point for the United Fruit Company. The container port at Santo Tomás de Castilla lies just across the bay.
A Puerto Barrios map poster shows a town built to meet the sea. The grid stops at the waterfront, the docks stretch into the bay in straight lines, and the curve of the coast wraps around the harbour. It is a simple, strong composition in black and white.
Streets and avenues follow a clean rectangular plan across the flat coastal land, one of the most orderly town layouts on this stretch of the Caribbean.
Sheltered water surrounds the town on its seaward side, and the gentle curve of the bay frames the harbour in a single sweep.
Long docks project into the bay from the waterfront, reflecting the town's origins as a railway and banana-export terminal.

Koteā ko Puerto Barrios
Puerto Barrios is where many journeys along the Caribbean coast start, including boats to Lívingston and across to Belize. A poster keeps the grid and the bay in view long after the trip, or reminds someone of the town they grew up in.
Personalise the title and subtitle with your own wording, add a date and keep the coordinates line or edit it. Five styles to choose from: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand.
