Te mapa
Canguaretama is on the southern coast of Rio Grande do Norte, close to the border with Paraíba. The town centre sits a little inland. The municipality reaches the Atlantic at Barra do Cunhaú, where the Curimataú River meets the sea through an estuary lined with mangroves. From above, the map moves from the street pattern of the town to a coastline shaped by river channels.
The area has a notable place in Brazilian history. In 1645, during the Dutch period in the northeast, a massacre took place at the Cunhaú chapel. The victims were later recognised as the Martyrs of Cunhaú and Uruaçu and were canonised in 2017.
A Canguaretama map poster combines these layers: a modest inland grid, roads leading toward the coast and the winding channels of the estuary. Fields and plantations fill the space between them, adding an even texture that holds the composition together.
The river widens into branching channels and mangrove areas before reaching the sea, forming the most intricate shapes on the map.
The small coastal settlement at the river mouth has its own cluster of streets. Its beach runs along the Atlantic edge.
The inland town forms a compact grid of streets, linked to the coast by roads that cross the flat coastal plain.
