Te mapa
Cape Girardeau sits on the west bank of the Mississippi River in southeastern Missouri, on bluffs and rolling ground above the water. The downtown lies close to the river, protected by a concrete floodwall painted with large murals of local and regional history, while newer neighbourhoods and commercial areas spread west toward Interstate 55.
The city takes its name from Jean Baptiste de Girardot, a French trader who established a post on a rocky promontory along the river in the eighteenth century. It is home to Southeast Missouri State University, whose campus sits on a hill near the older part of town.
A Cape Girardeau map poster is built around the river. The Mississippi curves along one side, the cable-stayed Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge crosses to Illinois, and the grid of the old town gives way to looser, curving streets on the rising ground to the west.
The river forms a broad curving edge along the east side of the city, with the floodwall and downtown streets running close beside it.
A cable-stayed bridge carries traffic across the Mississippi to Illinois, a long straight line over the water that anchors the map.
The Southeast Missouri State University campus occupies a rise near the older part of town, its grounds and paths forming a distinct patch on the map.
