Te mapa
Springfield sits in the flat farmland of central Illinois, near the Sangamon River. From above, the city is a steady grid of streets centred on downtown and the capitol complex, with rail lines crossing through and interstates wrapping the east and south sides. To the southeast, Lake Springfield spreads out in long, branching arms, the largest natural-looking shape on the map.
As the state capital, Springfield is home to the Illinois State Capitol and the Old State Capitol, which stands on a central square. The city is closely tied to Abraham Lincoln, who lived and practised law here. His home is preserved in the downtown area, and his tomb stands in Oak Ridge Cemetery on the north side. Historic Route 66 also passed through the city.
A Springfield map poster brings out the clarity of a Midwestern capital. The grid is strong and even, the capitol district forms a dense heart, and the lake adds a flowing contrast to the straight lines. In black and white, the pattern looks almost like a civic diagram, organised, legible and quietly handsome.
The State Capitol and the Old State Capitol square sit at the heart of the downtown grid, marking the city's civic and historic centre.
The reservoir southeast of the city spreads in long, irregular arms, a soft, organic shape set against the straight streets of the grid.
Lincoln's home lies close to downtown, while Oak Ridge Cemetery, where his tomb stands, occupies a green, curving space on the north side.
