Te mapa
Capraia is one of the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago, lying between Corsica and the Italian mainland and much closer to Corsica. Volcanic in origin, it is elongated north to south, with steep cliffs on its western side and a more accessible eastern coast. Most of the island is covered by Mediterranean scrub and crossed only by footpaths, with no road circling its shore.
Human settlement is concentrated in the northeast, where the harbour and the village of Capraia Isola are linked by a short road climbing the slope. Above them stands Forte San Giorgio, a Genoese fortress overlooking the approach from the sea. Nearly everything else on the map is open ground, with trails leading toward the interior and a small seasonal lake known as the Stagnone.
For more than a century much of the island was used as an agricultural penal colony, which closed in 1986, and its old buildings still stand in the landscape. Today Capraia is part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park. A Capraia map poster shows its lean silhouette and the single cluster of streets that serves as the island's entire town.
The port and the village above it form the only real street pattern on the island, joined by a short road rising from the water.
The Genoese fort occupies high ground above the village, a compact, angular shape overlooking the harbour and the sea lanes beyond.
The western side falls steeply to the sea along a coast with few landings, giving the outline a firm, largely unbroken edge.

Koteā ko Capraia
Capraia rewards the people who make the ferry crossing or sail in on a summer evening, and it tends to stay with them. A map of it is quiet and spare, suited to a hallway or a reading corner.
