The flat plateau
With no hills or valleys, the island's few roads run in long, direct lines. On the poster this gives Pianosa an unusually calm and geometric interior.

Te mapa
Pianosa lies in the Tyrrhenian Sea south-west of Elba, and its name reflects what the map makes obvious: this is a flat island. There are no mountains to bend the roads, only a low plateau edged by modest cliffs and rocky shores. The outline is compact and roughly triangular, with a small projection to the north that gives it a recognisable profile.
The only settlement is a small village beside the harbour on the east side. From there, a handful of straight tracks run out across open land. Much of the island is fields, scrub and old farm plots, so most of the map is open space. A Pianosa map poster is spare and minimal, for people who like an island shown with restraint.
For much of the modern era Pianosa was a penal colony, and later a high-security prison that closed at the end of the 1990s. Access is now limited, and the island is part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park. Its history goes back to Roman times, when it was a place of exile for a member of the imperial family.
With no hills or valleys, the island's few roads run in long, direct lines. On the poster this gives Pianosa an unusually calm and geometric interior.
A single small cluster of buildings on the eastern shore. It is the only dense spot on the whole map and the landing point for visitors arriving by boat.
The low, rocky shoreline has been left largely undeveloped. Because it is part of a national park, no marinas or resorts break the line of the coast.

Koteā ko Pianosa
Pianosa appeals to people who know the Tuscan islands well, to walkers and divers who made the crossing, and to anyone interested in places shaped by isolation. Its clean, compact outline makes a quiet, graphic print.
