Te mapa
Caraballeda lies on the central Venezuelan coast in Vargas, the state now also known as La Guaira, east of the port and airport that serve Caracas. On a map the town is a thin band of streets squeezed between open water to the north and the abrupt slopes of the coastal range to the south, where contour lines crowd together within a short distance of the beach.
The shoreline is its most distinctive element. Breakwaters, a sheltered marina and a golf course break the coast into deliberate shapes, and stream beds come down from the mountains and fan out across the low ground before reaching the sea. Those fans recall December 1999, when heavy rains sent debris flows through Caraballeda and neighbouring towns and reshaped the land along this coast.
A Caraballeda map poster sets these forces side by side in simple line work: the ruled edge of a harbour, the looser grid of residential streets and the untouched mass of forest rising behind. It is a portrait of a place with very little flat land, where every street has to find room between mountain and water.
Harbour walls and moorings form sharp, man-made angles on an otherwise gently curving shoreline. They are among the most graphic details when the coast is drawn in black and white.
South of the town the coastal range climbs steeply. It is part of the massif that separates the coast from Caracas, and it leaves an almost empty dark mass above the last streets.
Streams leaving the mountains spread across the coastal strip in wide fan shapes. Much of the town is built on this ground, where the 1999 floods left their mark.
