Carcavelos sits on the Lisbon coast in the municipality of Cascais, where the Tagus estuary opens into the Atlantic. On a map the shoreline takes the top billing: one of the longest sandy beaches on this stretch of coast, a clean curve between rocky points, with the ocean filling the whole lower edge of the frame.
Behind the beach, the Cascais railway line and the seafront road run parallel to the water, and the town rises inland in a loose weave of residential streets, gardens and small squares. Further back, the A5 motorway draws a firm line across the top. The seafront university campus is a clear geometric block close to the sand.
The name also belongs to a historic fortified wine from the vineyards of this area, one of Portugal's lesser-known appellations.
