Cayman Brac is the easternmost of the three Cayman Islands, a British Overseas Territory in the western Caribbean. On a map it is a slender strip of land running roughly west to east, about twelve miles long and little more than a mile wide. Its name comes from the Gaelic word for bluff, a reference to the limestone plateau that rises steadily toward the eastern end.
Roads follow the north and south coasts at the foot of the Bluff, with a few routes climbing onto the plateau and crossing its scrub-covered top. The airport sits at the lower western end, where the land is flattest. At the eastern tip the cliffs drop straight into the sea, and a lighthouse stands near the edge.
The limestone is riddled with caves, several of which are said to have sheltered islanders during hurricanes. The island is also known for its diving, including a Russian-built frigate deliberately sunk off the northwest coast as an artificial reef. A Cayman Brac map poster shows the island's simple, elongated form with its two parallel shore roads and the plateau between them.
A limestone plateau fills the eastern half of the island, lightly drawn with tracks and trails, and ends in sheer cliffs at the easternmost point.
Two coastal roads run parallel along the north and south shores, linked by a handful of routes that cross the island or climb the Bluff.
A wider frame includes Little Cayman just to the west across a short channel, pairing the two Sister Islands in a single composition.

Brackers living abroad, divers who return to the same reefs and families who have spent holidays on the Sister Islands all have reasons to keep this outline close. Its long horizontal shape works especially well in landscape orientation above a sofa or desk.
