Te mapa
Ceará-Mirim is in Rio Grande do Norte, a short distance northwest of Natal, in Brazil's Northeast. The town overlooks the valley of the Ceará-Mirim River, a broad green band of fertile land running toward the coast. From above, the streets sit on higher ground while the valley below is filled with fields.
The valley was long devoted to sugarcane, and the town grew wealthy in the nineteenth century from its sugar mills, or engenhos, some of whose old houses still stand. Today the municipality stretches to the Atlantic, where beaches and dunes line the shore, while the town itself stays inland on its rise above the valley.
A Ceará-Mirim map poster shows the relationship between town and valley very clearly: a compact grid on the slope, and the wide, open river floodplain below it. The contrast between built ground and farmland makes an elegant composition. It suits anyone with roots in this part of the Northeast or a feeling for its sugar-country history.
The Ceará-Mirim valley spreads below the town as a wide green floodplain, an open area that frames the streets on the map.
The historic town sits on higher ground above the valley, its streets clustered on the rise in a compact, clearly defined pattern.
Routes lead out across the valley toward Natal and the Atlantic, the long connecting lines of the composition.
