Cerejeiras lies in the south of Rondônia, in Brazil's western frontier region, not far from the border with Bolivia. Like many towns founded during the settlement of Rondônia in the late twentieth century, it follows a planned layout. On the map, straight streets cross at right angles and form a clear, regular grid.
Around the town, the landscape is largely agricultural, and it has become known for large-scale farming, especially grains. Long, straight rural roads run out into the fields and divide the land into big rectangular plots. The name Cerejeiras means cherry trees in Portuguese, which adds a gentle note to a place of wide horizons.
