Te mapa
Chancay lies on Peru's central coast, north of Lima, where the Chancay River valley reaches the Pacific. The old town sits on higher ground above the sea. Its streets form a grid that runs down toward the bay. To the north and south, the coast is dry and bare, and the irrigated valley forms the only green strip inland.
The coastline has changed in recent years. A large deep-water port, opened in 2024, has added long piers, breakwaters and cargo yards along the shore. On a Chancay map poster these new straight lines stand next to the older, irregular blocks of the historic town.
The valley is also the namesake of the Chancay culture, a pre-Columbian society known for its textiles and pale ceramic figures. The river's fields and irrigation channels, which still shape the land inland from the town, show why people have settled here for so long.
Long piers and cargo terminals reach into the Pacific next to the town. On the map they form sharp geometric shapes against the curve of the coastline.
Irrigated fields follow the river inland through otherwise dry desert. On the poster the fine field pattern covers the valley floor and stops abruptly at the barren slopes.
The historic centre sits on raised ground above the bay. Its grid runs down toward the water and gives the map an orderly core.
