Chandrapura is in Bokaro district in Jharkhand, in the coal and industrial belt of the Damodar valley. From above, the town is dominated by the Chandrapura Thermal Power Station, whose buildings, ash ponds and rail sidings take up a large area. Around it, residential colonies with regular street layouts sit beside older, more organic settlements.
The power station, run by the Damodar Valley Corporation, is the reason for much of the town's planned layout, and the staff housing areas appear as orderly blocks of streets.
