Chengala lies in the Kasaragod district in the far north of Kerala, a short way inland from the coast. It is a semi-urban area of scattered homes, small commercial centres and roads that follow the lie of the land, set among coconut and areca plantations. On a map it looks less like a compact town and more like a network of settlements joined by winding routes.
The landscape of this part of Kerala is made of low laterite hills, valleys and streams that run toward the Arabian Sea. Chengala grew as a local centre for the surrounding villages, and its layout reflects gradual growth along roads rather than planning.
