Cheruthazham is in the Kannur district of northern Kerala, a short distance inland from the coast. Like much of the region, it is less a single town than a spread of homesteads and small centres along roads that wind across low hills. Rivers and backwater channels in the area add irregular water shapes to the map.
The landscape alternates between laterite uplands, where houses stand among coconut palms and cashew trees, and lower ground used for paddy cultivation. Roads follow the higher ground and join at small junctions, forming a network that looks almost hand-drawn when seen from above.
