Te mapa
Chickasha is the county seat of Grady County in central Oklahoma, southwest of Oklahoma City. From above it reads as a classic plains town: a regular street grid organised around the old railroad, with blocks set out at right angles and neighbourhoods filling the squares on either side. The Washita River winds along the eastern side, adding a curving line to an otherwise straight plan.
The town grew up with the railroad in the late nineteenth century, and the tracks still run through the centre of the map. Chickasha is home to the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma and is known regionally for its Festival of Light, a large holiday display held each winter.
A Chickasha map poster makes the most of that crisp geometry. The grid comes out almost like graph paper, broken by the diagonal of the railway and the meanders of the river. Around the edges the blocks give way to section-line roads stretching over the open prairie, which makes the town's shape all the clearer.
Even, right-angled blocks fill the centre of town and give the poster a calm, orderly rhythm typical of towns laid out in Oklahoma's settlement years.
The Washita meanders along the eastern side of town, and its loose curves set up a strong contrast with the straight streets.
The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma occupies its own area within the grid, where campus paths and buildings interrupt the regular blocks.

Koteā ko Chickasha
Former students, families with deep Grady County roots and anyone who has driven into town for the Festival of Light will recognise this grid right away. Its clear structure looks good in both modern and traditional rooms.
