Chillum lies in Prince George's County, directly along the northeastern boundary of Washington, D.C. On a map the straight diagonal line of the District border is clearly visible at its edge, with the city grid on one side and the more varied suburban street pattern of Maryland on the other.
The community is mostly residential, with apartment complexes, small houses and commercial strips along the main roads.
