Te mapa
East Hampton lies on the eastern side of Hampton, Virginia, near the tip of the Virginia Peninsula where the James River, the Chesapeake Bay and the harbour of Hampton Roads meet. The land is flat and low, and from above it is laced with tidal creeks and inlets that break the street grid into irregular fingers of land. Water is present in almost every direction.
Hampton is often described as the oldest continuously settled English-speaking community in the United States, dating to the early seventeenth century. Nearby Fort Monroe, a moated stone fort at Old Point Comfort, guards the entrance to Hampton Roads, and the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel carries Interstate 64 across the water toward Norfolk. Langley Air Force Base lies just to the north.
An East Hampton map poster reads as a study in water and land. In black and white, the creeks and shorelines draw intricate, branching outlines, while the neighbourhood streets fill the dry ground between them in neat suburban patterns. Bridges and causeways add firm straight lines across the channels, tying the whole composition together.
Narrow inlets reach deep into the land, splitting neighbourhoods into small peninsulas and giving the poster a delicate, branching outline wherever water meets shore.
The moated, bastioned fort at Old Point Comfort sits at the entrance to Hampton Roads, a precise geometric form that stands out against the surrounding shoreline.
The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel carries Interstate 64 across the harbour on low trestles and artificial islands, a straight line reaching south across open water.
