Te mapa
Chinsali is the capital of Muchinga Province in northeastern Zambia. It became a provincial capital when the province was created in 2011. The town lies near the Great North Road, the long highway that runs from Lusaka towards Tanzania. On the map, the settlement is modest in size, with a small street grid and administrative buildings surrounded by wide expanses of plateau bush and farmland.
The area has an important place in Zambian history. Kenneth Kaunda, the country's first president, was born at Lubwa Mission near Chinsali, where his father worked, and the district is closely linked with the independence movement. The map shows none of this directly, but for many people it adds meaning to the town's quiet layout of roads and blocks.
A Chinsali map poster is mostly about space and restraint. It shows a small built area, the main roads that connect it with the rest of the country, and a wide surrounding margin. It suits people from Muchinga, public servants posted to the provincial capital, and anyone interested in Zambia's history since independence.
The main highway passes near the town, connecting it with Lusaka and the Tanzanian border. On the poster it forms a long, confident line through open country.
Chinsali's streets form a small, fairly regular grid around its administrative centre. It is a clear focal point in the middle of a spacious composition.
Bush and farmland surround the town on all sides. The wide pale margins convey the scale of the highland plateau in this part of Zambia.

Koteā ko Chinsali
Chinsali is a map for families from Muchinga, civil servants who served in the new provincial capital, and people interested in Kaunda's birthplace. Its spare layout makes a calm piece for a wall and carries plenty of personal meaning.
