Te mapa
Chipata is the main town of Zambia's Eastern Province and sits near the border with Malawi. On a map it is organised around the Great East Road, the highway that runs from Lusaka toward Malawi, passing through the town centre and linking it to the wider region. Streets branch from this main road into residential areas and market districts.
The town lies in a shallow valley surrounded by low hills, and the built-up area spreads unevenly into the landscape rather than filling a neat grid. The central business district is compact, while outer neighbourhoods follow the terrain and older tracks, creating a looser, more organic pattern at the edges.
A Chipata map poster keeps the focus on this simple structure: the strong line of the Great East Road, the dense centre and the gradual thinning of streets into farmland. The town serves as a gateway for travellers heading to South Luangwa National Park, and as a trading centre for the surrounding agricultural region.
The main highway runs through the centre, the town's clearest line and the route east to Malawi and west to Lusaka.
Shops, offices and markets gather in a small, dense core, easy to spot against the more open surrounding districts.
Low hills shape the town's edges, and outer roads curve with the land rather than following a fixed grid.
