Numbered city Areas
The capital is divided into numbered Areas rather than named quarters. Each forms its own cluster of streets, which gives the map an unusual patchwork structure.

Te mapa
Lilongwe became Malawi's capital in 1975, replacing Zomba, and was planned from the start as a low-density garden city. Instead of a single dense core, the map shows separate districts divided into numbered Areas, linked by broad roads and separated by wide stretches of green. The Old Town, with its markets and older commercial streets, lies apart from Capital Hill and the government quarter to the north.
The Lilongwe River runs between these two centres, and its wooded corridor is one of the strongest lines on a Lilongwe map poster. Roundabouts mark the main roads, and residential areas unfold in loops and cul-de-sacs rather than a strict grid. For a city of more than a million people, the effect is unusually airy: plenty of open space, with the street network arriving in distinct patches.
Lilongwe Wildlife Centre, a sanctuary beside the river between Old Town and City Centre, keeps a stretch of natural woodland in the middle of the capital. At the edges, roads thin out into the farmland of Malawi's central plateau, where maize and tobacco fields reach towards the horizon. The layout records a very deliberate idea of what a new capital should look like.
The capital is divided into numbered Areas rather than named quarters. Each forms its own cluster of streets, which gives the map an unusual patchwork structure.
A green, winding strip follows the river between Old Town and City Centre. It stays largely free of streets and cuts a soft line through the middle of the capital.
The commercial Old Town and the planned City Centre on Capital Hill sit apart. On paper they appear as two distinct points of density linked by long roads.

Koteā ko Lilongwe
The map works well for Malawians living abroad, for people who worked or studied in Lilongwe, and for anyone drawn to cities planned around open space. Its scattered layout makes an unusually calm composition on a wall.
