Chistopol’ sits on the left bank of the Kama River in Tatarstan, where the river widens into the Kuybyshev Reservoir. From above, the water fills a large part of the map, and the town stretches along the shore with a regular grid of streets typical of a nineteenth-century Russian merchant town. The blocks run inland from the waterfront in neat rectangles.
The town is home to the Vostok watch factory, long known for Soviet and Russian wristwatches. During the Second World War, many writers were evacuated to Chistopol’, including Boris Pasternak, and the house where he lived is now a museum. The old merchant houses along the central streets still reflect the town's trading past.
