Te mapa
Cinco Saltos lies in the Alto Valle of Río Negro province in northern Patagonia, close to the Neuquén river and not far from the city of Neuquén. The valley is an irrigated oasis in dry steppe country. From above, it is a precise patchwork of orchards, divided by canals, windbreak rows and straight rural roads.
The town takes its name from the five drops, or saltos, on an irrigation canal nearby. That fits a place whose landscape was made by irrigation. Apples and pears are the main products of the valley, and packing sheds and fruit farms reach right up to the edge of town.
A Cinco Saltos map poster shows a compact grid of town streets surrounded by the ruler-straight farmland of the valley. The river winds along one side, and the bare plateau rises above the irrigated strip at the edges of the wider view. Lake Pellegrini lies a little to the north.
Canals and ditches run in straight lines through the orchards. They give the poster a fine, regular texture and explain how this green valley exists in dry country.
The farmland around town is divided into narrow rectangular plots lined with windbreak trees. From above they form an unusually tidy, geometric landscape.
The Neuquén river winds along the valley floor. The dry plateau above it marks where irrigation ends, and the sudden stop gives the map a clear frame.
