Coihueco lies east of Chillán in the Ñuble region of central-southern Chile, where the Central Valley begins to rise toward the Andes. On a map, the town itself is a modest grid of blocks around a central plaza, in the Spanish colonial pattern, surrounded by a much larger rural commune of fields, farm roads and scattered settlements.
Agriculture shapes the area, and irrigation channels and field boundaries are part of the texture of the land. Further east the ground climbs toward the mountains, and roads grow sparser and more winding. The town serves as the service centre for this farming district and has close ties with nearby Chillán.
