College Park, just outside Washington, D.C., is shaped above all by the University of Maryland, whose flagship campus fills a large part of the map. From above you can see its looping campus roads, broad lawns and the long green mall. They sit against the straight line of Baltimore Avenue, the US Route 1 corridor that runs north to south through the city.
East of the campus, the Paint Branch and the Northeast Branch of the Anacostia River trace green, winding corridors lined with trails. Nearby is College Park Airport, founded in 1909 when Wilbur Wright trained the first military pilots there. It is widely regarded as the oldest continuously operating airport in the world. Metro and rail lines add straight diagonals to the pattern.
