Contour-hugging streets
Most streets follow the slope sideways, not head-on. They make long curving bands stacked one above another, linked by short steep lanes and stairways that climb between them.

Te mapa
Covilhã sits on a slope that falls sharply from the granite heights of the Serra da Estrela toward the broad Zêzere valley. From above, the town reads as a series of stepped terraces. Streets run along the contour lines, and short, steep connectors cut straight down between them. Few places in Portugal show their terrain so clearly in the street pattern.
For centuries the town lived from wool and cloth. Water coming off the mountain powered mills along the streams on either side of the centre. Many of those factory buildings now belong to the University of Beira Interior, so a large part of the town's industrial fabric has become lecture halls and campus. On a map, that shows as larger blocks scattered among the smaller older lots.
A Covilhã map poster shows the tension between mountain and valley. The historic core packs itself onto the upper slope. Newer neighbourhoods spread downhill toward the flatter ground, and roads wind upward toward the plateau. With the colour taken away, the town becomes a study in gradient: dense and knotted at the top, looser and more regular where the land levels out.
Most streets follow the slope sideways, not head-on. They make long curving bands stacked one above another, linked by short steep lanes and stairways that climb between them.
Small watercourses cut down the mountainside on either side of the old centre. They once powered the wool mills, and they still mark natural edges in the town's layout.
Winding roads leave the upper edge of town and climb toward the Serra da Estrela plateau. Their tight switchbacks stand out against the denser urban grid below.

Koteā ko Covilhã
Covilhã is often the town people remember from studying at the university, skiing in the mountains or visiting family in the Beira interior. A map of its stacked streets is a quiet reminder of a place defined by its slope.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example with a graduation year or a family name. Choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Order it as a $9 digital file or as a printed poster with an optional wooden frame.
