Te mapa
Cururupu is a municipality in the north of Maranhão, Brazil, on a stretch of Atlantic coast known as the Reentrâncias Maranhenses. There, tidal channels, estuaries and mangrove forests cut the shoreline into a maze of inlets and low islands. The area is protected for its wetlands and birdlife.
The town is compact and slightly inland. It has a small grid of blocks around a central square and roads running out across low, flat country. The drama of the map lies beyond the town, where rivers split into branching channels and the coastline dissolves into mangrove islands.
A Cururupu map poster works best as a wider frame that includes this coast. The contrast between the town's small street grid and the tangled, branching water around it makes for a striking and unusual image, unlike the maps of most Brazilian inland towns.
The shoreline is deeply indented by estuaries and tidal channels lined with mangroves. From above, it looks like a branching pattern of water and low islands.
The town centre is a small, regular grid around a central square, a firm and orderly shape set against the irregular coastal landscape around it.
This coast is part of a protected wetland area important for migratory birds and mangrove ecosystems, which is why so much of the map is unbuilt.

Koteā ko Cururupu
Cururupu makes for an unusual map, since much of its character lies in water rather than streets. It suits people from the town, those who have travelled along the Maranhão coast, and anyone who likes maps where nature does most of the drawing.
