Te mapa
Cwmbran in Torfaen, south Wales, was designated in 1949 as the first new town in Wales. It was planned to house workers for the industries of the eastern valleys. Rather than growing around an old centre, it was built as a set of distinct neighbourhoods, each with its own shops and community facilities, linked by roads to a central shopping area.
The town lies in the valley of the Afon Lwyd, with hills rising on either side. The Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal runs along the western slope, and parks and green corridors separate the residential districts. Cwmbran's large pedestrian town centre is one of its best-known features.
A Cwmbran map poster shows that plan clearly: cul-de-sacs and curving roads clustered in neighbourhood units, a compact commercial core, and the river and canal running roughly parallel through the valley. It is a record of an ambitious piece of post-war planning.
Residential districts were planned as separate clusters of curving streets, divided by green space. This gives the map its cellular structure.
The river runs down the valley floor through the town. It sets the main direction of roads and development.
The Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal follows the western hillside above the town, a thin line of water tracing the contour.

For families who moved to Cwmbran in its early decades and for those who grew up in its neighbourhoods, the town's plan is personal. A poster of it captures an unusual and well-planned piece of Welsh history.
