Te mapa
Dale City is a large planned community in Prince William County, Virginia, about 25 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. It was developed from the 1960s onward as a series of residential sections, and from above it shows the classic postwar suburban pattern: curving streets, loops and cul-de-sacs branching off a few main roads, with schools, parks and shopping centres placed between them.
One well-known detail is its naming scheme: Dale City's neighbourhoods carry names ending in "dale", and they were laid out roughly in alphabetical order as construction moved on. Interstate 95 runs near its eastern side, and wooded stream valleys wind between the neighbourhoods, breaking the suburban grid into separate pockets.
A Dale City map poster renders that layout in black and white, and the effect is almost botanical. The branching roads look like leaf veins, the cul-de-sacs like small buds, and the green corridors appear as open channels between them. It is a clear picture of how American suburbs were designed in the second half of the twentieth century.
Hundreds of short dead-end streets branch off the loops, forming small rounded shapes that fill the map with a distinctive, repeating suburban pattern.
The community was built section by section, and each neighbourhood forms its own recognisable cluster of streets connected to the main roads.
Wooded creek corridors run between the neighbourhoods, leaving open, street-free bands that separate the sections and give the composition breathing room.

Koteā ko Dale City
Many military, federal and commuter families have passed through Dale City, and a map of its streets is a lasting reminder of a first home, a childhood neighbourhood or a posting near Washington. Its pattern makes an engaging, decorative piece too.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, for example adding your neighbourhood's name or the year you moved in, and choose one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. It comes as HD files for $9 or as a printed poster.
