Te mapa
Del City is a small city surrounded by the Oklahoma City metropolitan area, on its southeast side. From above, it follows the section-line grid typical of the Great Plains: long straight arterials a mile apart, filled in with curving residential streets and cul-de-sacs from the postwar decades. Crutcho Creek winds through the eastern part of the map, one of the few features that breaks the grid.
The city grew quickly after the Second World War, largely because of nearby Tinker Air Force Base, which still shapes the local economy and much of the landscape to the east. Many of the houses date from that postwar expansion, and the neighbourhoods have the regular, single-storey pattern you would expect from that period.
A Del City map poster captures the geometry of an American inner suburb: a firm grid of arterials, quieter loops of housing inside each square mile, and interstate and air base lines at the edges. In black and white, the rhythm of the section lines is the main subject, broken here and there by a creek or a park.
Main roads run at regular one-mile intervals, dividing the city into large squares that give the poster its strong, orderly frame.
Inside each square, curving residential streets and cul-de-sacs from the housing boom after 1945 add a softer pattern to the straight arterials.
To the east, the long runways and open ground of Tinker Air Force Base appear as a broad, spare area very different from the housing blocks.

Koteā ko Del City
Del City suits military families who were stationed at Tinker, people raised in its postwar neighbourhoods, or anyone who likes the calm order of a Plains grid. The map is a record of a very particular American suburb.
