Te mapa
Den’enchōfu, in Tokyo's Ōta ward, is one of Japan's best-known planned residential districts. It was developed in the 1920s as a garden city, inspired by the English model of Ebenezer Howard and backed by the industrialist Shibusawa Eiichi. The plan remains the main reason to look at it from above.
West of the station, streets radiate outward like the ribs of a fan, crossed by concentric semicircular roads. The result is an arc-shaped pattern that is almost unique in Tokyo, where most neighbourhoods grew in a dense, irregular mesh. Tree-lined streets and large, green residential plots reinforce the sense of order.
The Tama River runs a short distance to the south-west and marks the boundary with Kanagawa. A Den’enchōfu map poster shows a remarkable piece of early twentieth-century urban design: a formal, symmetrical plan set into the fabric of Tokyo's suburbs, and a genuinely striking image in black and white.

The district was planned in the 1920s on garden-city principles, with wide tree-lined streets and generous residential plots.
The Tama River flows a short way to the south-west, and its broad channel can frame the edge of a wider composition.
