Toshima Map Poster & Print
Toshima is one of Tokyo's twenty-three special wards. It covers about thirteen square kilometres of the city's north-west, and its centre of gravity is Ikebukuro Station. Rail lines converge there from several directions, cutting through the ward in long, curving strokes. Around the station, large blocks of department stores and offices give way quickly to narrow, irregular streets of low houses and small shops.
Ikebukuro is among the busiest stations in the world, served by the Yamanote Line and several private and subway lines. East of the station, the Sunshine City complex and its tower, Sunshine 60, rise above the grid. When Sunshine 60 opened in 1978, it was the tallest building in Asia.
Further out, Toshima becomes quieter. Zoshigaya Cemetery, a large, leafy grid of paths, is the resting place of writers such as Natsume Sōseki. To the north-east, Sugamo is known for a shopping street popular with older residents.
