Te mapa
Shimotoda is the old name of the area that is now Toda city, just north of Tokyo across the Arakawa. On the map, the river forms the southern boundary, a wide band of water between broad grassy embankments. North of it, the city's streets fill the flat low ground with warehouses, apartment blocks and small houses.
The JR Saikyo Line runs through the city on an elevated track, with stations at regular intervals, and the Shinkansen tracks follow the same corridor above it. This long straight line cuts diagonally across the grid and anchors the layout. Expressways and wide arterial roads add further straight lines through the lowland.
Near the river is the Toda rowing course, a long, straight artificial lake built for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and still used by university crews. A Shimotoda map poster shows the river, the rowing course and the rail line lying parallel to each other, three strong lines that give this flat city a clear structure.

The broad river and its grassy flood banks form the southern boundary with Tokyo, a wide open band along the edge of the frame.
The elevated rail corridor runs diagonally across the city, linking its stations and giving the street grid a strong single axis.
