Derby lies just south of Wichita, and its map shows the logic of the Great Plains. Section-line roads run straight north–south and east–west, cutting the land into even squares. Inside them, newer subdivisions add curving streets and cul-de-sacs, so the plan alternates between strict right angles and soft loops.
The Arkansas River runs along the western side of town. Its winding course is the one irregular line in an otherwise measured landscape. Parks and green strips follow the smaller creeks through the neighbourhoods, and farmland still borders the town to the south and east, keeping the edges of the built-up area sharp and legible.

The river curves along Derby's western edge. Against the straight roads of the plains, its meanders are the most organic line in the whole composition.
