Dhrol lies in the Jamnagar district of Gujarat, on the Saurashtra peninsula, along the road between Jamnagar and Rajkot. It was once the capital of the small princely state of Dhrol, ruled by a Jadeja Rajput dynasty. On a map the older part of town appears as a compact knot of lanes, with newer streets and the highway stretching out beside it.
Just outside the town is Bhuchar Mori, the site of a sixteenth-century battle between Mughal forces and the state of Nawanagar, now marked by a memorial and remembered in the region's history. Around Dhrol the land is open and mostly flat, divided into farm fields with scattered ponds, village roads and small check dams.
